The provider of my website home search capability has just introduced a new feature. You can now search by the Walk Score of property locations (along with all the other typical search criteria). This is really cool. Now you can get some idea of how easy (or not) it may be to get around a certain area without driving. Walk Score assigns a score from 0 to 100, 0 meaning you probably can’t live there without a car, 100 meaning you can sell your car and get along fine.

When you go to my search page, you can click on the “Walk Score” drop down menu box and see the a screen similar to above. Just enter the minimum Walk Score that suits you along with any other search criteria (price range, number of bedrooms, etc). Then hit the Search button and view the Results.
As shown below, you will see the list of homes found with their Walk Score displayed next to each home address (see the walking icon with the score next to it). You can then view the home details and select the Walk Score link in the upper right to see the distance to various locations around the home. Of course, you can also sort by Walk Score.

Keep in mind that the scores are an approximation. There may be other factors that it doesn’t take into account, such as access to light rail now available in Tempe. But it should give you a starting point to narrow down home locations that might work for your lifestyle.
